Bacteria in the soil then convert these compounds back into sulfate, which can be absorbed by plants or released back into the atmosphere as sulfur dioxide.

The sulfur cycle is essential for the health of ecosystems, as sulfur is a key nutrient for plants and a component of many biological molecules. It also plays a role in the formation of clouds and precipitation, and it is a significant factor in the formation of acid rain.
