Svartkroppsmodellen describes a theoretical object that absorbs all incident electromagnetic radiation at all frequencies and wavelengths. This perfect absorption means that the object does not reflect any light, nor does it transmit any light. The term "svartkropp" is Swedish for black body. When such an object is heated, it emits radiation. The spectrum of this emitted radiation depends solely on its temperature, not on its shape or composition. This emitted radiation is known as black-body radiation.

The study of black-body radiation led to significant developments in quantum mechanics. Classical physics predicted that a black body would emit an infinite amount of radiation at short wavelengths, a phenomenon known as the ultraviolet catastrophe. Max Planck resolved this issue in 1900 by proposing that energy is not emitted or absorbed continuously but in discrete packets called quanta. The energy of each quantum is proportional to the frequency of the radiation. This revolutionary idea formed the foundation of quantum theory.

The spectral radiance of a black body at a given temperature is described by Planck's law, which provides the exact distribution of emitted energy across all wavelengths. Wien's displacement law, derived from Planck's law, states that the wavelength at which the emitted radiation is most intense is inversely proportional to the temperature of the black body. Stefan-Boltzmann law describes the total energy radiated per unit surface area of a black body across all wavelengths, which is proportional to the fourth power of its absolute temperature. While a perfect black body is an idealization, many objects in nature, such as stars, approximate black-body behavior.
