Suuriräjähteistä, known in English as supernovae, are powerful and luminous stellar explosions. They occur at the end of a star's life cycle. There are two main types of supernovae, categorized by their spectral characteristics and the underlying physical mechanisms.

Type I supernovae are characterized by the absence of hydrogen lines in their spectra. A common subtype, Type Ia supernovae, results from the thermonuclear explosion of a white dwarf star in a binary system. If a white dwarf accretes enough mass from its companion star, it can reach the Chandrasekhar limit, triggering runaway nuclear fusion and a catastrophic explosion. These events are important as standard candles in cosmology due to their consistent peak luminosity, allowing astronomers to measure distances to distant galaxies and study the expansion of the universe.

Type II supernovae, on the other hand, exhibit hydrogen lines in their spectra. These typically occur in massive stars, those with at least eight times the mass of our Sun. When such a star exhausts its nuclear fuel, its core can no longer support itself against gravity. The core collapses, leading to a rebound shockwave that blasts the outer layers of the star into space. These explosions are crucial for the chemical enrichment of the interstellar medium, dispersing heavy elements synthesized within the star into the cosmos, which are then incorporated into new generations of stars and planets. The remnants of Type II supernovae can include neutron stars or black holes.
