Suurennusteho, often translated as magnification power, refers to the ability of an optical instrument, such as a telescope or microscope, to enlarge the apparent size of a distant or small object. It is a crucial specification that determines how much closer an object will appear to the observer.

The magnification power of a simple lens system is calculated by dividing the focal length of the objective lens or mirror (the lens closest to the object) by the focal length of the eyepiece (the lens closest to the observer's eye). For example, a telescope with an objective focal length of 1000mm and an eyepiece focal length of 25mm would have a magnification power of 40x (1000mm / 25mm = 40). This means the object would appear 40 times larger than it does to the naked eye.

It is important to note that higher magnification power does not always equate to a better viewing experience. While it can reveal finer details, excessive magnification can lead to a dimmer image, reduced field of view, and increased blurring due to atmospheric conditions or optical aberrations. The practical limit of useful magnification is often determined by the aperture (diameter of the objective lens or mirror) of the instrument, as a larger aperture gathers more light, allowing for clearer images at higher magnifications. Resolving power, which is the ability to distinguish between two closely spaced points, is often a more important factor than pure magnification for astronomical observation.
