Surfacetosea is a term used in oceanography and environmental science to describe the dynamic coupling between the ocean’s surface layer and the deeper water column. It emphasizes cross-layer exchanges and feedbacks that connect surface processes—such as wind stirring, solar heating, evaporation, and gas exchange—with subsurface physical, chemical, and biological responses.

In practice, surfacetosea refers to the set of mechanisms by which surface conditions influence deeper water properties and vice versa. Key processes include vertical mixing and entrainment across the mixed layer, the formation and dissipation of stratification, upwelling and downwelling events, and the transport of heat, nutrients, dissolved gases, and organic matter through the water column.

Researchers study surfacetosea with a range of tools, including satellite observations of sea surface temperature and color, autonomous floats (such as ARGO), ship-based CTD casts, and ocean gliders. Tracers, dye releases, and models are used to quantify cross-layer transport, residence times, and the response of ecosystems to surface forcing.
