Superpositiotila, often translated as "superposition state," is a fundamental concept in quantum mechanics. It describes a quantum system, such as an electron or a photon, that exists in multiple possible states simultaneously until a measurement is made. Before measurement, the system is not definitively in one state or another, but rather in a combination of all its potential states. This is analogous to a coin spinning in the air, which is neither heads nor tails until it lands.

The mathematical representation of a superposition state is a linear combination of the basis states. For example, if a system can be in state |0> or state |1>, its superposition state can be represented as α|0> + β|1>, where α and β are complex numbers called probability amplitudes. The square of the magnitude of these amplitudes, |α|² and |β|², gives the probability of finding the system in state |0> or |1> respectively, when a measurement is performed.

The act of measurement causes the superposition to collapse, forcing the system into one of its definite states. This phenomenon is often referred to as the "collapse of the wave function." Superposition is a key ingredient in quantum computing, enabling qubits to represent more information than classical bits and facilitating complex calculations.
