Suomirock is a broad label used to describe Finnish rock music, particularly that produced in Finland since the 1960s. The term encompasses a wide range of styles—from garage rock and punk to post-punk, indie rock, and heavy metal—often featuring lyrics in Finnish and a distinct national character. It is commonly used by Finnish media and music historians to distinguish domestic rock from English-language international acts, while acknowledging cross-border influences.

Origins lie in the late 1960s, when Finnish groups absorbed beat, rhythm and blues, and British rock. Early pioneers such as Wigwam, Blues Section, and Tasavallan Presidentti helped establish a Finnish-language and Finnish-sounding rock tradition, setting the template for subsequent generations.

During the 1980s and 1990s, the scene diversified with punk, new wave and alternative rock. Internationally known acts like Hanoi Rocks achieved fame abroad, while domestic bands such as Don Huonot, CMX, Apulanta, and The Rasmus built large Finnish audiences. Nightwish emerged in the 1990s into symphonic metal, expanding the scope of Suomirock beyond traditional guitar-based rock.

In the 2000s and beyond, the Finnish rock scene solidified its indie and mainstream branches. Festivals such as Ruisrock, Provinssi, and Tuska have been central to development and exposure, and several Suomirock acts have gained international followings, contributing to Finland's reputation as a prolific source of contemporary rock and metal.
