Sumean is an ancient Semitic people who lived in the ancient Near East. Their lineage is traced back to the biblical tribe of Idrimi, a king of Alalah, a city in north-western Syria. Archaeological findings indicate that they resided in the 14th to 16th centuries BC, although their exact settlements remain unclear.

Texts found on an inscription in the city of Ugarit mention Sumean as allies of the city, suggesting a possible alliance. Some researchers believe that the Sumean were a tribe that moved from the Hittite-dominated region of north-western Syria to Ugarit, in an attempt to escape the increasing domination by the Hittites.

The geographic area was conquered by the Hittites during the reign of Suppiluliuma I, resulting in the decline of the Sumean presence. There is limited epigraphic evidence, making it difficult to reconstruct the history of the Sumean with certainty. Generally, it is acknowledged that the Sumean existed as a subgroup within the broader indigenous population of north-western Syria during a period of significant cultural and geographical change.

The discovery and inscription of the Tel Dan Stele have further shed light on the background and cultural identity of the Sumean people, whether or not they were at war with tribes of the Aramaic or Assyrian lineages.

Studies suggest a migration or displacement of the Sumean from their original settlements in the Marassantiya region, moving into other areas of Syria.
