suiban

Suiban (水盤) is a shallow, wide vessel used in Japanese flower arrangement, ikebana. The name, literally water basin, reflects its role as a container for water-based displays. Suiban are typically low-profile and wide-mouthed, shaped round, oval, or rectangular, and constructed from ceramic, porcelain, metal, or stone. The interior is usually glazed or treated to resist water; thickness varies, and many pieces rest on a small stand.

In ikebana practice, suiban provide a base for arrangements that emphasize horizontal lines, space, and water. They are central to the Moribana style, a modern form popular in the 20th century, where stems are arranged over a shallow water or damp substrate to evoke landscapes. The vessel can be used with water fill, or with a thin layer of sand, pebbles, or moss to stabilize materials. Stems may be anchored with a kenzan (floral frog) or may be arranged without one, depending on the school and design.

Beyond traditional ikebana, suiban are used in contemporary floral design and in some bonsai or miniature landscape displays that require a shallow-water presentation. Available in a range of sizes, finishes, and glazes, suiban are selected to complement the color and form of plant material, as well as the intended composition and setting.
