suiban
Suiban (水盤) is a shallow, wide vessel used in Japanese flower arrangement, ikebana. The name, literally water basin, reflects its role as a container for water-based displays. Suiban are typically low-profile and wide-mouthed, shaped round, oval, or rectangular, and constructed from ceramic, porcelain, metal, or stone. The interior is usually glazed or treated to resist water; thickness varies, and many pieces rest on a small stand.
In ikebana practice, suiban provide a base for arrangements that emphasize horizontal lines, space, and water.
Beyond traditional ikebana, suiban are used in contemporary floral design and in some bonsai or miniature landscape
