Subventrikulära refers to anatomical structures located below or beneath the ventricles of the brain. The brain contains two large lateral ventricles and two smaller, midline ventricles: the third and fourth ventricles. These fluid-filled cavities are crucial for the production and circulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Structures described as subventricular are therefore situated in the regions directly inferior to these ventricular spaces.

A prominent example of a subventricular structure is the subventricular zone (SVZ). The SVZ is a neurogenic niche, meaning it is a region within the adult mammalian brain where new neurons are continuously generated throughout life. This process is known as adult neurogenesis. The SVZ is particularly important for the generation of interneurons, which are a type of neuron that modulates the activity of other neurons. Cells within the SVZ migrate radially to populate different brain regions.

The concept of "subventricular" is primarily used in neuroscience and neuroanatomy to precisely locate and describe brain regions and their cellular components, particularly in relation to the ventricular system.
