Subunitate, or subunit, is a component that forms part of a larger molecular assembly, system, or organization. In science, subunits are discrete units that retain individual properties but function in concert to produce emergent behavior of the whole. The concept is central to biology, chemistry, and materials science.

In biology and biochemistry, many proteins exist as multi-subunit complexes. The holoenzyme comprises multiple polypeptide chains called subunits; their arrangement determines activity and regulation. Examples include hemoglobin, which has two alpha and two beta subunits, and RNA polymerase with distinct subunits that guide transcription initiation. Subunit assembly is guided by interface compatibility, chaperones, and post-translational modifications, and dissociation into subunits can modulate function or enable regulation and engineering.

In virology and vaccines, viral capsids are often built from repeating subunits called capsomeres; the subunit arrangement dictates symmetry and stability. Subunit vaccines use purified protein subunits rather than whole pathogens to stimulate immunity.

In chemistry and materials science, polymers are formed from monomer subunits, and many supramolecular assemblies are stabilized by interactions between subunits. The subunit concept also informs enzyme complexes and multi-enzyme assemblies in metabolic pathways, where subunit composition affects kinetics and regulatory control.

Understanding subunits aids in explaining regulation, assembly, and the design of therapeutics and materials. Analyzing subunit composition and stoichiometry supports insight into structure–function relationships and guides engineering efforts.
