subsynovial
Subsynovial refers to the tissue and space located immediately beneath the synovial membrane in joints and tendon sheaths. The subsynovial layer lies between the synovial lining and the fibrous capsule or tendon sheath and contributes to the environment that supports joint function. It is composed mainly of loose connective tissue that contains a network of small blood vessels, lymphatics, adipocytes, fibroblasts, and resident immune cells. The extracellular matrix includes collagen fibers and proteoglycans that provide structural support and enable fluid exchange with the synovial fluid.
Location and relations: Subsynovial tissue is present in all synovial joints, including large joints such as
Physiological role: The subsynovial layer participates in the maintenance of the joint environment by supporting nutrition
Clinical relevance: Changes in subsynovial tissue, such as thickening or fibrosis, can occur with chronic inflammation
