Substancesentities is a term used in information science and knowledge representation to describe the concrete instances of chemical substances that are tracked as discrete entities within datasets. The concept distinguishes between a substance, defined as a general class such as water, ethanol, or acetylsalicylic acid, and a substancesentity, which is a specific occurrence or sample of that substance, such as batch A-001 of distilled water from supplier X, lot 2024-11-01.

In this framing, a substance provides the conceptual meaning and properties common to all instances of that chemical, while a substancesentity captures the particular instance with attributes that may vary by sample. Substancesentities are typically modeled in ontologies as individuals that are instances of a substance class and are linked by relational predicates such as isInstanceOf or derivedFrom. Common attributes include purity, quantity, unit, batch or lot number, supplier, storage conditions, dates, and regulatory identifiers (for example CAS number, InChIKey). They may also record analytical results, certificates of analysis, and provenance information.
