Subphases G1 refers to the G1 phase of the cell cycle, a critical period of growth and preparation for cell division. It is the first of the four main phases of the cell cycle, preceding DNA synthesis (S phase). During G1, the cell increases in size and synthesizes proteins and organelles necessary for DNA replication and subsequent mitosis.

The G1 phase is not a uniform period. It is often subdivided into early G1, mid G1, and late G1. Early G1 is characterized by rapid cell growth and the synthesis of specific proteins required for DNA replication. Mid G1 involves further growth and the accumulation of molecular machinery for DNA synthesis. Late G1 is a crucial checkpoint where the cell assesses internal and external conditions to determine whether to proceed to S phase. Factors such as nutrient availability, growth factors, and DNA integrity are evaluated. If conditions are unfavorable, the cell may enter a quiescent state called G0 or initiate programmed cell death (apoptosis).

The duration of the G1 phase can vary significantly depending on cell type, environmental conditions, and developmental stage. In rapidly dividing cells, G1 may be relatively short, while in terminally differentiated cells, it can be extended or absent. The G1 phase is tightly regulated by a complex network of proteins, including cyclins and cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs), which ensure that cell division occurs only when appropriate. This regulatory control is essential for maintaining genomic stability and preventing uncontrolled cell proliferation, which can lead to cancer.
