Submixar, in audio engineering, refer to submixes: groups of individual channels routed to a dedicated submix bus or subgroup, producing a single summed signal that can be processed and controlled separately before joining the main mix. This routing helps organize a project and enables shared processing for a subset of tracks.

Implementation can vary by platform. In analog consoles, the channels assigned to a subgroup feed a separate bus, and the subgroup has its own fader for level control. In digital audio workstations, a bus or group track receives the outputs of selected tracks, and the bus can have its own equalization, compression, or effects, before routing to the main stereo bus.

Purposes and benefits include streamlined level control, consistent processing across a set of tracks, and easier automation. Submixes also facilitate routing to effects or to the final mix without altering the individual track routes. They are commonly used to manage dense sections of a mix, such as drums, backing vocals, guitars, or orchestral sections, where collective processing makes balancing simpler.

Submixes are related to but distinct from stems and auxiliary sends. A stem is a standalone mix of a group that can be exported or re-routed, while a submix is an active routing within the session. Auxiliary sends, by contrast, typically route signals to effects or monitoring paths rather than forming a full summed group. Considerations when using submixes include maintaining proper levels relative to the main mix and avoiding phase or latency issues that can affect the overall sound.
