Subduksjonsområdet refers to a geological zone where one tectonic plate slides beneath another and sinks into the Earth's mantle. This process occurs at convergent plate boundaries, which are areas where two lithospheric plates collide. The denser plate, typically oceanic crust, is forced downward under the less dense plate, which can be either oceanic or continental crust.

The subduction process is fundamental to plate tectonics and is responsible for many significant geological features and phenomena. As the subducting plate descends, it heats up and releases water, which lowers the melting point of the overlying mantle wedge. This molten rock, or magma, then rises to the surface, forming volcanoes. Chains of volcanoes, known as volcanic arcs, are a characteristic feature of subduction zones.

Furthermore, the immense friction and stress generated as the plates grind against each other lead to frequent and often powerful earthquakes. The deepest and most powerful earthquakes on Earth are typically associated with subduction zones. Trenches, which are deep depressions in the ocean floor, are also commonly found parallel to subduction zones where the oceanic plate begins its descent. The presence of subduction zones dictates the distribution of mountain ranges, volcanic activity, and seismic hazards across the globe.
