Subdominantare is a term used in some music theory discussions to describe the act of emphasizing or applying the subdominant function in a musical passage. In tonal harmony, the subdominant function concerns the fourth scale degree and its associated chords, most commonly the IV chord in major keys and iv in minor keys. Subdominantare thus refers to deliberate moves that foreground the pre-dominant region before moving toward the dominant and back to the tonic.

Common realizations of subdominantare include direct moves from the tonic to the subdominant (I–IV), sequences that linger around the IV area through prolongation or neighboring chords, and progressions that go IV–V or IV–I as part of a longer cadence.
