Subclassification is the process of dividing a broad category into more specific subcategories within a hierarchical framework. It serves to organize knowledge, improve retrieval, and support analysis by creating finer-grained groups that share defining characteristics.

In biology, subdivision of ranks is common; while formal ranks include class, order, family, subfamily, and genus, the term subclassification is sometimes used to describe finer divisions within a taxon, enabling researchers to reflect shared traits or evolutionary relationships.

In information science and libraries, subclassification schemes such as Dewey Decimal or Library of Congress classifications subdivide topics into narrower topics. This enables precise indexing, search, and cross-referencing.

In data science and machine learning, subclassification refers to hierarchical or layered classification tasks, where a model first assigns data to broad groups and then to more specific subcategories. It supports multi-label and fine-grained categorization.

In practice, good subclassification requires clear criteria, stable taxonomy, and consideration of user needs and interoperability. Over-fragmentation can hinder usability, while inconsistent criteria can reduce accuracy.
