styrenului
Styrene, also known as ethenylbenzene, is an organic compound with the formula C₈H₈. It consists of a benzene ring attached to an ethenyl group, giving it the appearance of a vinyl derivative of benzene. At room temperature styrene is a colorless, oily liquid with a characteristic sweet odor. The compound is produced industrially primarily by the dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene, a process that operates at temperatures of 600–650 °C and is catalyzed by iron oxide or other metal oxides. Approximately 30 million tons of styrene are produced worldwide each year, making it one of the most widely manufactured petrochemicals.
Styrene is a key monomer for the production of polystyrene, a thermoplastic used in packaging, disposable tableware,
From a safety standpoint, styrene is classified as a possible carcinogen (Group 2B) by the International Agency
