Styrene, also known as ethenylbenzene, is an organic compound with the formula C₈H₈. It consists of a benzene ring attached to an ethenyl group, giving it the appearance of a vinyl derivative of benzene. At room temperature styrene is a colorless, oily liquid with a characteristic sweet odor. The compound is produced industrially primarily by the dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene, a process that operates at temperatures of 600–650 °C and is catalyzed by iron oxide or other metal oxides. Approximately 30 million tons of styrene are produced worldwide each year, making it one of the most widely manufactured petrochemicals.

Styrene is a key monomer for the production of polystyrene, a thermoplastic used in packaging, disposable tableware, insulation, and a variety of consumer goods. It also serves as a precursor for copolymers such as ABS (acrylonitrile‑butadiene‑styrene) and for the synthesis of resins, synthetic rubber, and other specialty polymers. The material’s low cost, ease of processing, and clarity contribute to its extensive commercial use.

From a safety standpoint, styrene is classified as a possible carcinogen (Group 2B) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Acute exposure can cause irritation of the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract, while chronic exposure may affect the central nervous system. Occupational exposure limits are established in many jurisdictions, and handling guidelines emphasize ventilation, protective equipment, and proper storage to mitigate risks. Environmental release of styrene is limited due to its volatility and rapid degradation in the atmosphere, but spills in water bodies can be harmful to aquatic life, prompting regulations on disposal and emissions.
