The term is a neologism combining stress, suggestion, and aesthesia (sensation). It appears in theoretical discussions of perception to describe how top-down factors could shape sensory experience in some individuals under pressure or heightened expectancy.

Symptoms and presentation include reports of auditory, visual, tactile, or gustatory shifts that occur in response to explicit instructions, implicit cues, or anxiety-related states.
