Structurewhether is a term used in linguistic theory to describe a class of sentence structures in which the content of an embedded whether-clause influences the syntactic configuration of the surrounding clause. The term is not widely standardized and appears mainly in discussions of the syntax–semantics interface and the typology of embedded questions. It emphasizes the structural consequences of the whether-clause’s position rather than only its semantic content.

In languages that permit flexible complementizer use, a whether-clause can interact with the main clause in several ways. It may function as a subject, an object, or a modifier, yielding alternative syntactic trees that encode the same propositional content. Common patterns include treating the structure as subject, as in “Whether the plan will succeed remains uncertain,” or as object, as in “I doubt whether the plan will succeed.” A third pattern treats the whether-clause as a complement or modifier within the larger clause, producing a different but equivalent surface realization.

The concept is used to compare how different languages realize embedded questions and to examine how negation, quantification, and tense interact with the presence of a whether-clause. It is particularly relevant to discussions of movement operations, scope, and the interface between syntax and semantics.

Critics note that structurewhether overlaps with established notions such as embedded questions and content clauses, and argue that the label may overgeneralize across languages with distinct typological properties. Nonetheless, it provides a concise way to frame structural variation around whether-clauses in syntactic analysis.
