Streptococcal pharyngitis, commonly known as strep throat, is a bacterial infection caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, also known as group A Streptococcus. It primarily affects the pharynx, the part of the throat behind the mouth and nasal cavity. The infection is characterized by a sudden onset of sore throat, which may be severe, and difficulty swallowing. Other common symptoms include fever, red and swollen tonsils, sometimes with white patches or streaks of pus, and tiny red spots on the roof of the mouth called petechiae. Swollen lymph nodes in the neck are also frequently observed.
