storheter

Storheter are physical quantities—properties that can be measured or specified by a magnitude and a unit. Each storhet has a measurable size, a corresponding unit, and often a defined dimension that governs how it combines with other quantities in equations. Storheter can be scalar, with magnitude only (for example mass or temperature), or vector, with both magnitude and direction (such as velocity or force).

In scientific usage, storheter are commonly divided into grundstorheter (base quantities) and ledstorheter (derived quantities). The SI system defines seven base storheter: length, mass, time, electric current, thermodynamic temperature, amount of substance, and luminous intensity. Derived storheter include velocity, acceleration, force, energy, power, and many others, formed from combinations of base storheter.

Each storhet has a unit, with SI base units being metre, kilogram, second, ampere, kelvin, mole, and candela. Derived units arise from these base units, for example newton for force, joule for energy, and pascal for pressure. Dimensional analysis uses the dimensions associated with storheter to check the consistency of equations and unit conversions.

Measurement of storheter involves uncertainty and requires calibration and traceability to international standards. Metrology, the science of measurement, provides the guidelines for accuracy, precision, and repeatability across disciplines.

Storheter form the foundation of quantitative science and engineering. They enable precise description, comparison, modelling, and communication of physical phenomena across contexts and applications. In Swedish, the terms grundstorheter and ledstorheter are used to distinguish base and derived quantities, respectively.
