Stomachsecreted is a term that refers to the substances produced and released by the stomach's glands, collectively known as gastric secretions. In standard medical usage, these substances are described as gastric juice, which plays a central role in digestion and mucosal protection.

The principal components are mucus, hydrochloric acid (HCl), pepsinogen, and intrinsic factor. Mucus protects the stomach lining; HCl creates an acidic environment and helps activate pepsinogen; pepsinogen is converted to pepsin, an enzyme that digests proteins; intrinsic factor enables vitamin B12 absorption in the small intestine. Some secretions are endocrine, including gastrin, a hormone released by G cells that stimulates acid secretion.

Cell sources for these secretions include mucous cells that produce mucus, parietal (oxyntic) cells that secrete HCl and intrinsic factor, chief (zymogenic) cells that secrete pepsinogen, and enteroendocrine G cells that release gastrin into the bloodstream.

Regulation of gastric secretion involves neural and hormonal pathways. The cephalic phase, triggered by sight, smell, or thought of food, stimulates secretion via the vagus nerve. The gastric phase responds to stomach distension and peptides, increasing secretion, while acidity triggers somatostatin to dampen secretion. The intestinal phase moderates or slows gastric secretions as chyme enters the small intestine, with hormones such as secretin and cholecystokinin contributing to the regulation.

Clinical relevance includes abnormalities such as hypochlorhydria or achlorhydria (low or absent acid), hyperchlorhydria (excess acid often from gastrinoma), gastritis, and peptic ulcers. Pernicious anemia can result from intrinsic factor deficiency. Medications like proton pump inhibitors and H2 receptor antagonists are used to reduce gastric secretion in certain conditions.
