A stoma is a surgically created opening in the body, typically on the abdomen, that allows waste to be expelled from the body. This procedure is often necessary when a portion of the intestine is diseased, damaged, or needs to be removed. The stoma itself is the visible part of the intestine that is brought through the abdominal wall. It is a moist, pinkish-red surface and does not have nerve endings, so it is not painful.

There are several types of stomas, with the most common being colostomy and ileostomy. A colostomy involves bringing a portion of the colon (large intestine) to the abdominal surface, while an ileostomy uses a portion of the ileum (small intestine). Urostomy is another type, where the urinary system is diverted to the abdominal surface. The location and type of stoma depend on the specific medical condition being treated.

Individuals with a stoma wear a pouching system externally over the stoma to collect waste. These systems consist of a skin barrier that adheres to the skin around the stoma and a pouch that attaches to the barrier. With proper care and adaptation, people with stomas can lead full and active lives, engaging in work, hobbies, and social activities. Education and support from healthcare professionals and stoma nurses are crucial for successful management.
