Stilektoner is a class of pigment–binder composites used in printing and surface finishing. The term refers to a family of toner-like materials designed to deliver high color saturation, durability, and compatibility with various substrates, including textiles, plastics, and paper. In practice, stilektoners function as pigment particles encased in a protective polymer shell that can be dispersed in aqueous or solvent-based systems and fused to the substrate by heat, pressure, or UV curing.

Etymology and history: The name combines style and toner, reflecting its origin in graphic arts research in the early 2000s, where researchers sought a more stable, process-friendly pigment system for hybrid printing. It is not a single chemical but a material class with tunable chemistry.

Composition and properties: Typical stilektoners consist of a colored pigment core coated with a styrenic-acrylate copolymer or similar binder. The coating improves dispersion, prevents agglomeration, and improves adhesion. Properties include high opacity, excellent lightfastness, broad chemical resistance, and adjustable viscosity. The color range spans primary hues plus specialty tones. Particle size is usually in the range of 100 nm to 2 micrometers for fine-raster applications.

Applications: Used in textile printing, digital inkjet and electrostatic printing, offset-like processes, and decorative coatings. They allow strong color reproduction on non-traditional substrates and during multi-layer finishing.

Variations and safety: Commercial lines include several grades optimized for heat fusion, UV curing, or aqueous systems. Standard safety practices apply; most formulations are designed to minimize VOCs and skin irritation.
