Steuertet is a term that appears in some discussions of taxation to denote a compact, single-number snapshot of the tax burden within a population. The word is not universally standardized and its usage varies across sources, but it is generally described as a quantitative index intended to summarize how much of household income is paid in taxes in a given period.

A common definition of steuertet is the ratio of total taxes paid by all households to total gross income earned by all households, expressed as a percentage. In this formulation, steuertet reflects the overall tax take as a share of income, before considering redistributive cash transfers. A variant used in policy analyses replaces total gross income with total disposable income or uses net taxes (taxes minus cash transfers) divided by gross income to measure the burden after transfers. Because of these variants, steuertet is not a single, universally adopted measure, but a concept that can be implemented in different ways depending on data availability and analytic goals.

Interpretation of steuertet focuses on the relative size of the tax burden rather than its distribution. A higher steuertet indicates a larger share of income going to taxes in the aggregate, but it does not by itself reveal progressivity or equity across income groups. To assess distributional effects, steuertet is typically examined alongside disaggregated data on taxes and transfers by income decile or household type.
