Stemmebåndet, also known as vocal cords or vocal folds, are two folds of mucous membrane tissue that stretch across the larynx, or voice box. They are essential for producing sound in humans and many other animals. When we breathe, the vocal cords are relaxed and open, allowing air to pass freely. However, when we speak, sing, or make any vocalization, the muscles in the larynx bring the vocal cords together. As air is expelled from the lungs, it passes through the narrow opening between the vocal cords, causing them to vibrate. This vibration creates sound waves, which are then modified by the throat, mouth, and nasal cavities to form distinct speech sounds.

The pitch of the voice is determined by the tension and thickness of the vocal cords. Tighter and thinner cords vibrate faster, producing a higher pitch, while looser and thicker cords vibrate slower, resulting in a lower pitch. The loudness of the voice depends on the force with which air is expelled from the lungs and the amplitude of the vocal cord vibrations. Various medical conditions can affect the vocal cords, including vocal cord nodules, polyps, paralysis, and infections, all of which can lead to voice disorders such as hoarseness, breathiness, or complete loss of voice. Maintaining vocal health involves practices like staying hydrated, avoiding excessive shouting, and seeking medical attention for persistent voice problems.
