Starostowie are a traditional title of office in ancient and medieval Europe, particularly in Eastern Europe and Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The term "starosta" comes from the Polish language, with "stara" meaning "old" or "leader". In medieval Poland and Lithuania, starostowie were high-ranking officials responsible for local government and administration.

A starostowie typically served as a deputy to a higher authority, such as a bishop, nobleman, or the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. They oversaw the execution of laws, collected taxes, and maintained order in their respective territories. The office of starostowie was often hereditary or transferred through appointment.

In Poland, the institution of starostowie emerged during the Piast dynasty in the 10th century. Over time, the role evolved, and starostowie gained significant economic and political power. During the Jagiellonian dynasty in the 15th and 16th centuries, starostowie became almost autonomous territorial lords, controlling vast tracts of land and serving as governors in specific regions.
