Starforming, or star-forming, refers to the processes and regions in which new stars originate from cold, dense gas within galaxies. Most star formation occurs in giant molecular clouds, where temperatures are low enough for gas to cool and gravity to dominate. In these clouds, localized overdensities collapse to form dense cores that continue to contract, heat up, and accrete material from their surroundings.

As collapse proceeds, protostars emerge at the centers of these cores and grow by accreting mass through circumstellar disks. Bipolar outflows and jets remove angular momentum and help regulate growth. Fragmentation within a collapsing region can lead to multiple stars forming in close association, and magnetic fields and turbulence influence the efficiency and pattern of this fragmentation. Star formation proceeds over timescales of hundreds of thousands to millions of years, and the surrounding material is progressively dispersed by stellar winds, radiation, and eventual supernova explosions from nearby massive stars.

Observationally, starforming regions are studied with a range of tracers. Molecular gas is mapped with CO and other molecules, while infrared and submillimeter observations reveal embedded young stellar objects and dusty disks. H II regions trace ionized gas around newly formed, hot stars. Notable nearby star-forming regions include the Orion complex and the Taurus molecular cloud, among others in different galactic environments. The study of starforming regions informs understanding of star formation rates, efficiencies, the initial mass function, and the interplay between star formation and galactic evolution.
