Typical activities encompass joint development of standards, alignment of national standards with international ones, adoption of ISO/IEC standards domestically and maintaining liaison with regulators. Regions and countries may also participate in mutual recognition arrangements for conformity assessment, helping to reduce duplicate testing and certification.

Challenges include reconciling divergent regulatory frameworks, resource constraints and the pace of technological change, as well as ensuring broad participation, including from small and medium-sized enterprises.
