Stabilizerkoodit, often referred to as stabilizer codes, are a fundamental concept in quantum error correction. They represent a specific type of quantum error-correcting code designed to protect quantum information from decoherence and noise that inevitably arises in quantum systems. The primary goal of a stabilizer code is to encode a small number of logical qubits into a larger number of physical qubits in such a way that errors affecting the physical qubits can be detected and corrected without disturbing the encoded logical information.

The mathematical framework behind stabilizer codes relies on the theory of group representations, specifically using the concept of stabilizer subgroups. A stabilizer subgroup is a set of Pauli operators (products of single-qubit Pauli matrices I, X, Y, Z) that commute with each other and leave the encoded quantum state invariant. These commuting operators, known as stabilizers, are used to measure the "syndrome" of an error. The syndrome is a set of outcomes from measuring the stabilizers, which uniquely identifies the type and location of an error that has occurred on the physical qubits.

By measuring the stabilizers, one can diagnose errors without collapsing the encoded logical state. Once an error is identified through its syndrome, a corresponding correction operation can be applied to restore the original logical qubit. The effectiveness of a stabilizer code depends on its ability to detect and correct a certain number of errors per encoded qubit. Common examples of stabilizer codes include the Steane code, the Shor code, and the surface code, each offering different trade-offs in terms of code distance, encoding rate, and error correction capability. Stabilizer codes are a cornerstone for building fault-tolerant quantum computers.
