Stabilisateurs, or stabilizers, are substances or devices designed to maintain or improve the stability of a system by counteracting destabilizing influences. They are used across many fields, from chemistry and materials science to electrical engineering and civil construction.

In chemistry and materials, stabilizers slow or prevent degradation of products. In polymers and plastics, antioxidants, UV absorbers, and heat stabilizers reduce the effects of heat, light, and oxygen. In fuels and lubricants, additives minimize oxidation and metal-related decomposition.

In the food and cosmetic industries, stabilizers help maintain texture, suspend solids, and prevent separation. Common food stabilizers include carrageenan, xanthan gum, pectin, and gelatin; they are often regulated as additives (for example, E numbers in the EU).

In electrical engineering, voltage stabilizers or regulators maintain a steady output despite input fluctuations; uninterrupted power supplies and stabilizing transformers are used to protect equipment.

In civil engineering, soil and road stabilization practices improve bearing capacity and durability, using lime, cement, or bituminous mixes. Stabilizers may also refer to devices that reduce structural vibration or movement.

In maritime and aerospace contexts, stabilizers such as fin stabilizers or gyroscopic systems reduce rolling or pitching, enhancing comfort and safety on vessels and aircraft.
