The styrene blocks are hard and glassy at room temperature, providing strength and rigidity. The butadiene block is soft and rubbery, allowing for flexibility and elongation. Under heat, the styrene blocks soften, allowing the material to be molded and processed like a thermoplastic. Upon cooling, the styrene blocks re-harden, effectively cross-linking the rubbery butadiene phase and creating a strong, elastic material.

SBS finds widespread application due to its versatile properties. It is commonly used in the manufacturing of footwear, particularly soles, where its durability and flexibility are advantageous. It is also incorporated into adhesives and sealants, enhancing their tack and elasticity. In the paving industry, SBS is used as an additive to asphalt to improve road performance, increasing resistance to cracking and rutting. Additionally, SBS is employed in the production of waterproof membranes, toys, and various molded rubber goods. Its ability to be processed using conventional thermoplastic techniques, combined with its rubber-like performance, makes it a cost-effective and widely utilized material.
