Stångdragning, also known as deadlift in English, is a compound barbell exercise that involves lifting a loaded barbell from the floor to a standing position. It is considered one of the three main powerlifting movements, alongside the squat and bench press. The exercise engages a large number of muscle groups throughout the body, including the hamstrings, glutes, quadriceps, back muscles (erector spinae, latissimus dorsi, trapezius), and forearms.

The execution of a deadlift typically begins with the lifter standing with their feet hip-width apart, positioned over the barbell. The lifter then bends at the hips and knees to grasp the barbell with an overhand or mixed grip. Maintaining a flat back and a neutral spine, the lifter extends their hips and knees to lift the barbell off the floor. The bar is pulled upward until the lifter is standing tall with their shoulders back. The descent is controlled by reversing the motion, lowering the bar back to the floor with a flat back.

There are several variations of the deadlift, including the conventional deadlift, sumo deadlift, Romanian deadlift, and stiff-legged deadlift, each emphasizing different muscle groups and offering slight biomechanical differences. Proper form is crucial in deadlifts to prevent injury, particularly to the lower back. Training the deadlift can contribute to increased overall strength, muscle mass, and improved athletic performance.
