Household electricity is almost universally supplied as AC because it is more efficient to transmit over long distances and can be easily transformed to different voltage levels using transformers. AC voltage is described by its frequency, which is the number of cycles per second, measured in Hertz (Hz). In Europe, the standard frequency is 50 Hz, while in North America, it is 60 Hz.

The choice between DC and AC depends on the application. While AC is dominant for power distribution, DC is essential for sensitive electronics and energy storage. Many modern devices that use AC power incorporate internal converters to change it into DC for their operation.
