Språkvetenskapen, or linguistics, is the scientific study of language. It examines the nature of language in all its aspects, including its structure, meaning, and use. Beyond these core areas, språkvetenskapen also explores pragmatics, which deals with how context influences meaning, and sociolinguistics, which studies the relationship between language and society. Historical linguistics traces language change over time, while psycholinguistics investigates the cognitive processes involved in language acquisition and use. Computational linguistics applies computational methods to the study of language, enabling tasks like machine translation and speech recognition.

The field aims to understand the universal properties of human language, as well as the diversity of languages spoken worldwide. It seeks to answer fundamental questions about how humans acquire, produce, and comprehend language, and how language evolves. Språkvetenskapen is not about prescribing how people *should* speak, but rather describing and explaining how language *is* used.
