Spojnik is a term used in Croatian grammar to denote conjunctions. Conjunctions are words or phrases that connect words, phrases, clauses, or sentences. They serve to establish a relationship between the connected elements, indicating coordination, subordination, or other logical connections.

Croatian grammar distinguishes between coordinating conjunctions and subordinating conjunctions. Coordinating conjunctions connect elements of equal grammatical rank, such as two nouns, two verbs, or two independent clauses. Examples include i (and), ali (but), ili (or), te (and, also), ni (neither/nor), a (and/but). For instance, "Jabuka i kruška su voće" (An apple and a pear are fruit) uses "i" to connect two nouns.

Subordinating conjunctions, on the other hand, connect a dependent clause to an independent clause. The dependent clause cannot stand alone as a complete sentence and its meaning is dependent on the main clause. Examples include da (that), ako (if), jer (because), dok (while/until), iako (although). An example is "Ne znam da li će doći" (I don't know if he will come), where "da li" introduces a dependent clause.

The correct use of spojnici is crucial for clear and coherent communication in Croatian, ensuring that the relationships between ideas are accurately conveyed. They are fundamental building blocks of sentence structure, facilitating the flow of thought and argument.
