Spirocycles are a class of polycyclic organic compounds in which two or more rings are connected through a single shared atom, known as the spiro atom. The rings intersect at this atom, producing a rigid, three-dimensional framework that often contributes to distinctive stereochemical and conformational properties.

In spirocyclic nomenclature, the rings are described using spiro[a.b]alkane notation, where a and b indicate the number of atoms in each ring excluding the spiro atom. The total number of atoms in the molecule is a + b + 1. Common examples include spiro[4.5]decane, which comprises a five- and a six-membered ring sharing a single carbon, and spiro[2.2]pentane, formed by two cyclopropane rings.
