Spiritmakers are producers who practice the art and science of creating alcoholic spirits through distillation. The term can refer to commercial distilleries, micro-distilleries, or individual artisans, and is used across historical and contemporary contexts. In many regions they have been known as distillers, stillmen, or alchemists, depending on era and local language.

Historically, distillation emerged in the medieval period and expanded with trade. Distillers were often regulated by guilds or state authorities, and products were subject to taxes, quality controls, and labeling. In the 20th century, prohibition and regulatory changes reshaped the industry. Since the late 20th century, a craft distilling revival has emphasized small-batch production and regional identity.

Operationally, spiritmakers select base materials—grains, fruit, sugarcane, or other fermentables—and employ stills and aging programs to produce spirits such as whiskey, rum, brandy, gin, vodka, tequila, mezcal, and liqueurs. Safety, licensing, and labeling compliance are central to practice.

Culturally and economically, spiritmakers contribute to local economies through manufacturing and tourism, and contribute to brand storytelling. Distilled products are regulated by quality and origin standards in many jurisdictions.

In contemporary contexts, the term spans global markets from large-scale producers to indie brands. Trends include transparency about ingredients, sustainable production, and innovation in botanicals and aging techniques, alongside debates about regulatory definitions and consumer education.
