Spectralweighted is a term used to describe the process of applying a frequency-dependent weighting to the spectrum of a signal. The aim is to emphasize or de-emphasize certain frequency components according to a chosen weighting function, which can reflect perceptual criteria, instrument response, or analysis goals. The concept is widely used across signal processing, acoustics, and related fields to shape spectral content prior to further analysis or measurement.

Mathematically, if X(f) denotes the spectrum of a signal (for example, its Fourier transform) and w(f) is a weighting function defined over frequency, the weighted spectrum is often expressed as W(f) = w(f)X(f) for complex spectra or W(f) = w(f)|X(f)| for magnitude spectra. The weighting function w(f) is selected to achieve the desired emphasis, such as preserving perceptually important bands or compensating for known system biases.

Common examples of spectral weighting in practice include perceptual weightings used in audio and acoustics, such as A-weighting and C-weighting, which approximate human loudness response. In other contexts, spectral weighting may reflect sensor frequency responses, architectural or environmental constraints, or the needs of feature extraction and classification in spectral-domain analyses.
