Spauda is the Lithuanian term for the printing and publishing industry. It covers the production of printed material such as newspapers, magazines, books, and journals, as well as the infrastructure that supports it—printing presses, publishing houses, distributors, and retailers. The word derives from the verb spausdinti, to print, and denotes both the physical process and the system for disseminating written work.

Historically, spauda arose with the spread of movable-type printing and the emergence of printed books, and over time it became a central instrument of culture and education in Lithuania. It played a significant role during periods of national revival and, in the 20th century, experienced shifts due to occupation, censorship, and later independence. In the modern era, spauda encompasses both traditional printed products and digital publishing, including online content and hybrid formats.

Today’s spauda includes various sectors such as book publishing (leidykla), newspapers (laikraštis), and magazines (žurnalas), as well as the technical and logistical sides of printing (spausdinimas) and distribution. The industry faces challenges common to many countries, including competition from digital media, changes in consumer habits, and economic pressures, but it also adapts through digital printing, print-on-demand, and online platforms. Spauda remains a contributor to culture, language maintenance, literacy, and information dissemination, while evolving to integrate traditional print with new digital ecosystems.
