A space vector is a mathematical object used to represent a quantity that has both magnitude and direction in a multi-dimensional space. In electrical engineering, space vectors are particularly useful for analyzing and controlling alternating current (AC) machines, such as induction motors and permanent magnet synchronous motors. They provide a way to visualize and manipulate the time-varying stator currents and magnetic fluxes of these machines as single, rotating vectors in a two-dimensional or three-dimensional space.

The concept of a space vector simplifies the analysis of AC systems by transforming the three phase-based quantities (e.g., phase currents Ia, Ib, Ic) into a single vector in a stationary or rotating reference frame. This transformation, often achieved using the Clarke and Park transformations, reduces the complexity of the equations governing motor behavior. For instance, in a three-phase system, the instantaneous stator current can be represented by a single space vector whose projection onto each phase axis corresponds to the instantaneous current in that phase.

The magnitude of the space vector represents the total magnitude of the current or flux, while its angle indicates its orientation in space. By controlling the magnitude and angle of the stator current space vector, engineers can effectively control the torque and speed of AC motors.
