Spaceship America is a proposed space tourism venture by Virgin Galactic, a company founded by Richard Branson. The project aims to provide suborbital space flights for paying customers, allowing them to experience weightlessness and view the curvature of the Earth. The spaceship, designed by The Spaceship Company, is a two-stage vehicle consisting of a carrier aircraft, WhiteKnightTwo, and the spaceplane, VSS Unity. The carrier aircraft takes off horizontally and carries the spaceplane to an altitude of approximately 50,000 feet, where it is released. The spaceplane then ignites its rocket motor, propelling it to a speed of Mach 3 and an altitude of 55 miles, the boundary of space. The flight lasts about 10 minutes, with the first 3 minutes spent accelerating to space, followed by 5 minutes of weightlessness, and the final 2 minutes spent descending back to Earth. The spaceship is designed to carry six passengers and two pilots, and the ticket price is expected to be around $250,000. The first commercial flights are planned to begin in 2023, with a total of 400 seats available for the first year. The spaceship America project is a significant step towards making space tourism a reality for the general public.
