Historically, spacefiction traces roots to early imaginative works such as Jules Verne’s From the Earth to the Moon and The First Men in the Moon, and H. G. Wells’ lunar stories. The genre expanded in the 20th century with pioneers of space opera like E. E. Doc Smith, and later with authors such as Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, and Ursula K. Le Guin, who broadened scientific and sociological perspectives. In contemporary literature, writers like Ann Leckie and Liu Cixin have expanded the field, integrating diverse voices and new scientific insights.

Themes commonly explored in spacefiction include the spirit of exploration, the ethics of colonization and resource use, contact with alien life, political and organizational governance, and questions of identity under cosmic conditions.
