soolalahuse

Soolalahuse is a sterile saline solution, an aqueous mixture of sodium chloride (NaCl) dissolved in water. The term is commonly used in Estonian medical practice and in English-language texts as saline solution. The most widely used concentration is isotonic saline, 0.9% w/v NaCl, which provides about 154 mEq/L of sodium and chloride and is osmotically compatible with human blood plasma.

Other concentrations include hypotonic solutions such as 0.45% NaCl and hypertonic saline such as 3% or higher NaCl, employed for specific therapeutic indications under medical supervision.

Preparation and quality: Soolalahuse is manufactured under sterile, pyrogen-free conditions. It is available as ready-to-use sterile bags or ampoules, or as sterile concentrate that must be diluted before use. It should be stored in sealed containers and kept within the manufacturer’s temperature range until use.

Uses: It serves as an intravenous infusion fluid for hydration and electrolyte management; a diluent for medications; a wound, skin, nasal, or eye irrigation fluid; and, in higher concentrations, as an inhalation therapy to mobilize pulmonary secretions under supervision.

Safety: Used appropriately, saline is generally safe; risks include infection from contamination, local irritation, and electrolyte disturbances if misused or infused too rapidly. It should not be substituted for blood or plasma in situations requiring large-volume resuscitation without medical supervision.
