It is characterized by a specific arrangement of thematic material, typically divided into three main sections: exposition, development, and recapitulation. The exposition introduces the principal themes, usually a primary theme in the tonic key and a secondary theme in the dominant key. The development section then explores and manipulates these themes through various modulations and variations. Finally, the recapitulation restates the themes, but this time both themes are presented in the tonic key, providing a sense of resolution.

The exposition often begins with the first theme, followed by a transition that leads to the second theme. The exposition may conclude with a closing section. The development section is where harmonic and melodic exploration occurs, often fragmenting and combining the original themes in new ways. Modulations to distant keys are common here. The recapitulation mirrors the exposition in its thematic order, but crucially, the second theme and any subsequent material are transposed to the tonic key, reinforcing the home key. Sometimes a coda, or concluding section, is added after the recapitulation for further emphasis on the tonic.
