Somatosensorisesta refers to the sensory system that arises from the body, as opposed to the senses originating in the head. It encompasses a range of sensory modalities including touch, temperature, pain, and proprioception, which is the sense of the relative position of one's own parts of the body and strength of effort being employed in movement. These sensations are detected by specialized receptors embedded in the skin, muscles, tendons, joints, and internal organs.

The processing of somatosensory information begins with the activation of these receptors. This activation generates nerve impulses that travel along afferent (sensory) neurons to the spinal cord. Within the spinal cord, these signals are processed and then transmitted upwards to the brain, primarily to the thalamus and subsequently to the somatosensory cortex located in the parietal lobe. Here, the information is further analyzed, integrated with other sensory inputs, and consciously perceived as touch, temperature, pain, or the position of our limbs. This complex system allows us to interact with our environment, maintain balance, coordinate movements, and detect potential harm.
