Solventsuse refers to the use and handling of chemical solvents across laboratories, industry, and consumer contexts. Solvents are liquids that dissolve, suspend, or extract substances and that facilitate reactions, cleaning, formulation, and separation processes.

Solvents vary by polarity and hydrogen-bonding properties. Polar solvents include water, alcohols such as ethanol, and acetone. Nonpolar solvents include hexane, toluene, and benzene. Protic solvents donate hydrogen ions; protic examples include water and alcohols; aprotic solvents lack hydrogen donation, examples include DMSO, acetonitrile, and dimethylformamide.

Common applications include extraction of compounds, reaction media, purification, chromatography, degreasing, and formulation of paints, coatings, and pharmaceuticals.

Safety: solvents can be flammable, toxic, and volatile. Exposure risks include dizziness, headache, respiratory irritation, and long-term effects on the nervous system, liver, or kidneys. Practices: use vented enclosures, good ventilation, storage away from heat, labeling, and personal protective equipment.

Environmental and disposal: VOC emissions contribute to air pollution; improper disposal can contaminate water and soil. Waste is managed as hazardous material and disposed under local regulations; solvent recovery and distillation can reduce waste.

Sustainability: green solvent initiatives seek less hazardous, renewable, and recyclable options, including water-based systems, bio-based solvents, and supercritical CO2. Solvent recovery technologies reduce emissions and costs.

Regulation: workplaces follow safety standards (OSHA, GHS) and chemical regulations (REACH, TSCA). Risk assessments, storage controls, ventilation, and emissions monitoring are common requirements.
