Solid state refers to a particular phase of matter where atoms or molecules are held in a fixed, ordered structure. In solids, particles vibrate about their equilibrium positions but do not move past each other, resulting in a definite shape and volume. This contrasts with liquids, where particles can move around, and gases, where particles are widely separated and move freely. Solids can be broadly categorized into crystalline solids and amorphous solids.

Crystalline solids, such as ice, metals, and salt, have a highly ordered, repeating arrangement of atoms or molecules known as a crystal lattice. This long-range order gives crystalline solids distinct physical properties like sharp melting points. Amorphous solids, like glass or rubber, lack this long-range order. Their particles are arranged in a more random, disordered manner, similar to liquids, and they typically soften gradually over a range of temperatures rather than melting sharply.

The forces holding the particles together in a solid determine its properties, including hardness, conductivity, and ductility. These interparticle forces can be ionic, covalent, metallic, or van der Waals forces. The study of solid-state physics focuses on the electronic, magnetic, and optical properties of solids, leading to advancements in materials science and technology, including semiconductors used in electronics.
